Jiri is a town located in the Dolakha, Nepal. It is named after its native people, the Jirels.

Jiri is 179 kilometers far from Kathmandu and lies at an altitude of 1,905 meters. It was once the main starting point for people trekking to Everest Base Camp. But now most of the trekkers would rather fly to Lukla than trek the long and difficult road from Jiri. 

Even though the Jiri route is more challenging, it takes you through beautiful villages, green hills, and forests letting you enjoy peaceful nature and experience the local culture. It gives majestic views of the several Himalayan range.

There are numerous things to do in Jiri from visiting Jiri Bazar to temple, monastery, park, and churpi and cheese factory. Some of the main attractions there are:

1. Jiri Bazar

Jiri Bazar is the market where you can buy things like food, spices, clothes, handicrafts and many more. You will find there different stores, restaurants, and hotels. 

2. Dolakha Bhimsen Temple

Dolakha Bhimsen Temple is a Hindu temple devoted to the Bhimsen, also known as Bhindyo in the Newar community. It is located just a few kilometers away from Jiri. 

The temple has no roof in the center and holds a triangular stone idol of Bhimsen, the god of trade, commerce, and fortune. 

It is also believed that Bhimsen’s statue sweating is a bad omen, signaling that something bad might happen to the country and it is a warning from Bhimsen to protect the people.

3. Everest Base Camp Trek

Jiri is famous for being the main gateway to the Everest region. You can start your trek from there and reach the Everest Base Camp within 18 to 20 days, enjoying the beautiful ancient villages, greeneries, rivers, and stunning views of mountains along the way.  

4. Churpi Factory and Cheese Factory

Jiri is popular for churpi and cheese. You can visit the factory and taste the churpi and cheese and even take a few to enjoy it later. 

5. Agricultural Development Centre

Jiri was the first place in Nepal to receive funds from the Swiss government and was developed as the Agricultural Development Centre which is maintained by the Swiss Government. It trains and employs locals to improve farming and support the local economy.

6. Lamjura Pass

Lamjura Pass is nestled between Jiri and the Everest region. Located at an altitude of 3,200 meters, the climb is tough but the beautiful wide landscape, and stunning sunrise and sunset views make it all worth it. You can also stop for a snack on a tea house at the top. 

7. Stone Park

Stone Park is located 25 kilometers away from Jiri Lincoln Bazar. It has large rocks, spacious seating area, and an outdoor swimming pool. It is an ideal spot for having a picnic with family and friends. 

8. Taksindu Monastery

Jiri is home to a notable Buddhist community. You can find several Buddhist monastaries there. Taksindu Monastery, also known as Thodung Sarswati Tirtha is one of the oldest and largest monasteries in Jiri that represents beautiful artwork and Tibetian culture. You will also get breathtaking views of mountain range including Lhotse and Mt. Everest from there.

Taksindu Monastery was established in 1946 under the guidance of a respected Rinpoche from Tengboche Monastery. It also serves as a center for Buddhist learning. It opens in the early morning and late afternoon.

9. Kalo Bhir

Kalo Bhir is about 4 hours walk uphill from Linkan Bazar. It is a huge rock standing on the top of cliff. You can see the three major towns including Dolakha, Charikot, and Jiri from a single sight.

10. Cherdung

Cherdung Hill is one of the best places you can explore in Jiri. It lies in a 5 to 6 hours walking distance from Jiri Bazar. You can have a spectacular view of Numbur, Gaurishankar, and other mountains from there. It is also an ideal destination for picnics and camping.

11. Rameta Danda 

Previously known as Rang-rang Cliff, Rameta Danda is located about 30 minutes uphill to the northeast of Linkan Bazar. You can see almost every part of the Jiri Valley from there. It is popular for picnics and gatherings. The shelters are also available for travelers.

How to Reach Jiri?

The Kathmandu to Jiri distance by road is 179 kilometers. You can go either by bus, taxi, or your own vehicle.

1. By Bus

You can easily get a bus from Old Buspark, Kathmandu to Jiri. It is one of the most popular and affordable ways to there. You will get there within 8 hours.

2. By Private Vehicle

You can travel in your own vehicle, drive at your own pace, and stop anywhere to enjoy the views. It will take 6-7 hours to reach there.

3. By Taxi

Another option is to hire a taxi, but it will be expensive costing above 10,000.

How is the Road Condition?

The road condition is challenging with rough and off-road parts. It will be more difficult if you are traveling in the monsoon season (June to August). The road will be muddy, slippery and prone to landslides. But with caution, the trip should be just fine.

There are many restaurants and cafes in Jiri where you can have Nepali food. Tibetan and Western foods are also available.

The winter (December to February) will be cold and snowy. If you are someone who loves snow, this can be an ideal time too. The monsoon (June-August) will be muddy and slippery.
